A truck loan calculator shows the payment and interest cost of a pickup or work truck loan. It uses the amount borrowed, rate, and term. Some tools also show a final balloon or business tax estimate. However, those figures depend on how the tool works and which tax rules apply.
So use the estimate to compare scenarios, not as a financing offer.
Enter the truck price, down payment, interest rate, and loan term to estimate your monthly payments and total borrowing cost.
For example, $65,000 at 7% for 60 months, without tax, down payment, trade-in, or balloon, shows $1,287.08 per month.

First, work out the amount borrowed. The current tool describes this purchase calculation:
P = truck price + sales tax − down payment − trade-in creditFor a fixed-rate loan with no balloon:
M = P × r ÷ [1 − (1 + r)^−n]Here, M is payment, P is principal, r is the decimal annual interest rate ÷ 12, and n is months. Examples assume equal month-end payments and no fees, so interest rate and APR coincide.
For $65,000 at 8% over 60 months:
r = 0.08 ÷ 12 = 0.0066666667
M = 65,000 × (0.08 ÷ 12) ÷ [1 − (1 + 0.08 ÷ 12)^−60]
M = 433.3333333 ÷ 0.3287895556 = $1,317.97Total interest is $14,077.94: unrounded payment × 60 − $65,000. A lender may adjust the last payment by pennies.
Balloon warning: The current widget applies the same formula to P − B, where B is the final balloon. That leaves the balloon outside monthly interest calculations. Its displayed amortization balance therefore excludes that balloon; it isn't the full debt still owed.
For a conventional interest-bearing balloon, use:
M = [P − B ÷ (1 + r)^n] × r ÷ [1 − (1 + r)^−n]Equivalently, add B × r to the widget's simplified payment. This is the present-value balloon formula shown by AutoLoanWise; the difference matters in Example 2.
At 0% interest, either formula reduces to (P − B) ÷ n; with no balloon, P ÷ n.
Question: A pickup costs $55,000. You pay $7,500 down and receive a $2,500 trade-in credit. Assume 5% tax on the full price, an 8% rate, 60 months, and no balloon or fees. What's the payment?
Solution: Sales tax = $55,000 × 0.05 = $2,750. Principal = $55,000 + $2,750 − $7,500 − $2,500 = $47,750. Next, apply the fixed-payment formula: $47,750 × (0.08 ÷ 12) ÷ 0.3287895556.
Answer: $968.20 per month, with $10,341.87 interest. Including the down payment and trade-in value, the modeled acquisition total is $68,091.87. This assumes no trade-in tax credit. Check the scenario in the calculator above.
Question: Finance $65,000 at 8% for 84 months, with a $15,000 balloon. There are no taxes, fees, down payment, or trade-in. What does the balloon change?
Solution: The current widget amortizes $50,000, producing $779.31 per month. For an interest-bearing balloon, add $15,000 × 0.08 ÷ 12 = $100 per month. Also, building a cash reserve without interest requires $15,000 ÷ 84 = $178.57 per month, rounded.
Answer: The widget shows $779.31, but conventional balloon math gives $879.31. Conventional interest is $23,862.10, versus the widget's $15,462.10. Payment plus reserve is $1,057.88 per month. Refinancing isn't guaranteed.
Question: A qualifying truck has a $65,000 eligible basis, 100% business use, and a 24% marginal federal rate. Assume sufficient business income and no other applicable limits. What's the simplified tax effect?
Solution: Deductible basis = $65,000 × 100% = $65,000. Estimated tax reduction = $65,000 × 24% = $15,600.
Answer: $15,600 is a tax illustration, not a rebate or loan reduction. IRS vehicle and eligibility checks still apply; the widget doesn't collect all needed information.
A longer term lowers each payment but usually raises total interest at the same positive rate. A balloon also defers principal, but the deferred balance can still earn interest. So compare total repayment and a credible plan for the final bill, not just the lowest monthly figure.
The same $65,000 loan at 8%, without a balloon or fees, produces:
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Loan repayment total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 months | $1,317.97 | $14,077.94 | $79,077.94 |
| 72 months | $1,139.66 | $17,055.57 | $82,055.57 |
| 84 months | $1,013.10 | $20,100.73 | $85,100.73 |
Moving from 60 to 84 months lowers the displayed payment by $304.87, but adds $6,022.79 in interest. Totals use unrounded payments, so multiplying the displayed cents may differ slightly.
By contrast, this tool divides payment by monthly miles. Fuel, insurance, repairs, permits, downtime, and balloon reserves need separate budgeting. “Total cost of truck” isn't lifetime ownership cost.
Rerun the Truck Loan Calculator with your quote. Then compare the lender's amount financed, schedule, fees, and balloon. A low payment still needs a workable payoff plan.
